For the past year and a half, I’ve been doing something that I’ve been wanting to do for some time – take hula lessons. I’ve attempted teaching myself through YouTube, Google, etc. but it’s not the same without a live teacher and knowing the correct nuances that come with learning the true Hawaiian way.
I’ve always been fascinated with anything Hawaiian – the culture, food, clothing, dancing, language, etc. since my first visit to Hawaii many years ago and various visits since.
In this time, I’ve learned many dances, performed with my lovely fellow residents in my community and learned the correct technique. We have a fabulous instructor who is patient, knowledgeable and talented in the Hawaiian ways.
Besides, hula dancing is great exercise! Now that I’m in my 80th year around the sun, I’ve learned that continuing to move the hips and “hula hands” gives me joy and helps me to keep agile.
I’m still a Zumba instructor and that also keeps me active and healthy, as well as my ushering job at The Smith Center.
Please do not be afraid to learn anything new. It’s never too late to train your brain and body to accept new activities.
In the near future I’ll be taking ukulele lessons, which is another “to do” list on my agenda.
Keep being active, take a new class, read a new book, meet new friends, do something that you’ve had on your bucket list for some time. Eat the cake, drink the wine, take the trip, and light that candle before it melts and gets thrown out.
We only live once. Life is to short not to take advantage of all that we have to offer.
POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND HAPPY HEALTH TO ALL!
