Zippy’s: Hawaiian Cuisine for the Masses

Zippy’s: Hawaiian Cuisine for the Masses

Hawaiian food is becoming more mainstream, and the valley is becoming a hotspot for island restaurants. Zippy’s is one of the leaders and they recently opened a new location in Henderson. The building, which has been the home of several places over the years, has been gutted and the new look is inviting.

Zippy’s, founded by Francis and Charles Higa, began in Honolulu in 1966. They have grown to 26 locations throughout the islands and here in the valley.

There is plenty to like and the variety of choices will keep everyone happy. Plates are front and center as you can order the Chicken Trio, an expansive collection of items including a piece of fried chicken, chicken katsu and five pieces of Korean bird. Rice and macaroni salad top off the plate.

The most popular item they serve is the Zip Pac, featuring fried chicken, breaded white flaky Hoki fish and a slice of teriyaki marinated meat. Hawaiians and I have long enjoyed hamburger steak, served with a large patty, green onions, and brown gravy.

Even though pasta isn’t necessarily associated with Hawaiian fare they offer spaghetti with garlic bread and if you want to add a little zip try the dish with chili.

Of course, you will find Loco Moco that according to legend was invented by teens in Hilo. A burger patty sits on top of rice that is smothered in gravy with two eggs finishing things off.

Not only is chili a part of many of the dishes but it can be ordered by itself too. I highly recommend one of the three choices that are available. With beans or without plus a vegetarian version, there is something for everyone.

Those seeking noodles won’t be disappointed. Fried editions are stir fried with spam, fish cake, cabbage and green onions. Saimin is a traditional dish and here noodles are cooked in broth with fish cake and sweet char siu pork.

Along with lunch and dinner, breakfast is available with some tempting bakery goodies. Meat N’ Eggs is full a choice of meats including Portuguese sausage and spam. With a nod to Asia a breakfast bento includes plenty of meat including corned beef hash.

You may want to just stop by for one of their desserts. Pies run the gamut from banana cream to custard. You will dream about dobash cake. A chocolate pudding-like filling is layered between chiffon cake that is topped with a cherry. Also, part of the goodie collection is haupia cake.

Chantilly cream puffs are a reason to visit along with cornbread that is some of the best I have found in the area. Malasada, Portuguese style donuts, are tossed with sugar.

It is apparent that Zippy’s does a large take-out business as they have a wall of lockers where you can pick up your order without the fuss.

Island cuisine is here and you will find it well represented at Zippy’s.
