Do you remember your firsts? Your first word? Your first step? Me neither. They were too far back in time.
What about your first dance? Your first date? I’ll bet you remember those! I do.
My first dance was in the school gymnasium. The girls on one side of the room, the boys on the other. When the music began, the boys had to get up the nerve to walk across the floor and ask a girl to dance.
The girls had their fingers crossed behind their backs, praying that someone would ask them! (Then they prayed their delicate toes would survive the crushing missteps of their partners!) Fortunately, fate smiled on me.
Someone did ask me to dance, and my toes survived his missteps!
My first date was with a dreamboat I met at a Y dance. Wylie was a blond Viking type with a twist—he was tall and slender, not muscle bound!
“Why did you ask me to dance?” I asked. He grinned. “You looked sweet. I figured you wouldn’t say no, and I wouldn’t die of embarrassment in front of everyone right there on the dance floor.”
We went to a movie on our first date and Wylie and I went steady until he went away to college.
His mother worried that he would pop the question. “You’re too young,” she chided, over and over. “You’ll ruin your future.”
He listened! We broke up.
I was devastated, but eventually I lost tract of Wylie. I’m not sure if he ever did pop the question to a fair damsel, but lately a friend mentioned that he’d known him.
Apparently, Wylie had a fabulous career in the armed services. Mr. Wylie ( Sir!) had become a General!
In the meantime, my first real love found me on a blind date. The circle of life engulfed us, and Donnie and I spent over five incredible decades together. A bed of roses with a few thorns thrown in to keep us on our toes!
It was a breathtaking romance, back in time, and I do remember our first!
