There are a number of factors to consider before you decide where to store your wines at home. Wine storage matters because wine is highly susceptible to changes in its environment.
Poor storage can lead to spoilage, including oxidation, loss of aroma, and premature aging. Proper storage ensures quality and longevity.
To set up your wine storage area, use a basement, cellar, pantry, closet, wine rack, or wine fridge. The latter provides optimal results, especially in smaller spaces like condos and apartments.
If you opt for a basement, cellar, closet, pantry, or wine rack, check the humidity level. Humidity should be moderate in the range of 60-70%.
Consider adding a bowl of water if the air is dry. It helps keep the corks moist and prevents oxidation.
A stable temperature is essential. It protects the flavors and structure of the wine. The ideal range is 50-59 degrees Fahrenheit.
Think of the cellar temperature in a castle. Wines flourish in a dark environment. Dark rooms and UV protected glass guard against premature aging, loss of fruit and off flavors.
Clear bottles are the most vulnerable to light. If light is an issue, cover your wine with a dark sheet.
Bottles with corks should be stored horizontally. Screw-cap bottles can be stored upright. Odors should be kept to a minimum. Corks breathe, so they can absorb odors. Don’t store wine near paint, chemicals, spices or in any kind of overly damp or moldy environment.
You should also avoid storing wine in the laundry room or in your garage (especially in southern Nevada given that most aren’t insulated). It’s best not to store wine in your kitchen or near appliances. The heat and vibration disturb the wine’s structure.
On your to-do list, you should check the temperature and humidity of your wine storage area on a monthly basis. Also look for any leaks. Each quarter, turn the bottles gently, wipe the shelves and check cork condition.
Choosing the right storage is a way of caring for your wines. They will age gracefully, preserving both flavor and value. It protects your investment. Cheers!
