We all have goals in life and then we grow older and wishes and dreams change with time.
One of my grandsons has amazing talent figuring things out so we thought he would be the next engineer genius. He wound up being a hair coloring expert and understands everything about the chemicals, etc. No one saw that coming.
I started out wanting the white picket fence, 2.3 children, 2 dogs and a suburban lifestyle. I never aspired for a profession (much to the chagrin of my parents) but one way or the other I found my way and made a living.
My trajectory changed after failed pregnancies, my first marriage failed and off I went to look for the good life out of the City to Florida and California. (For those of you from back east, “the City” always means New York. It never leaves you.)
My California life was very comfortable but working wasn’t an option with my 2nd husband so my brain sort of died for a while. That ultimately failed too.
Then the love of my life came along and he was broke, a political opposite of me. He was a veteran with some PTSD issues, had children and absolutely captured my heart and soul like no other.
I recall a day when we were out at Lake Mead and I had a moment when I felt happier than I had ever been in my entire life. To me, I had it all.
Now it’s 2025, I’m on the back side of my 70’s and a widow living the best way I can. My ultimate career choice turned out to be real estate for the last 30 years and I have reached the top of the game on my own.
I’m the broker of a luxury company and I think I got where I wanted to go. There’s a lot of satisfaction in that and I’m not afraid if it all falls apart one day.
Taking fear away and doing my best while living an unexpected life got me here.
