Whatever Happened To?
The other day it struck me – so many things that were familiar in my childhood have disappeared. Like … what ever happened to adenoids? What were they, anyway?
If similar stray thoughts pop into your brain occasionally, read on…
What ever happened to affordable movies and ladies with flashlights that showed you to your seat? There was usually dried out gum stuck under the seat, but you ignored it … or perhaps added your own when you were tired of chewing! The best thing: no one stopped you from staying to see the movie twice if you wanted!
What about eating something without knowing how many calories it had, or caring, or even knowing what calories were!
Did your mom tell you not to swallow gum because your insides would stick together? Or maybe she said, “Stop frowning. Your face will freeze like that!”
How about Meatless Tuesdays?
Remember making book covers out of brown paper bags?
What about folks like the ice man, the scissors grinder and the knife sharpener. I miss the jingling bell of the ice cream truck!
Shopping where the grocer knew you and saved things for you. He’d trust you ‘til tomorrow if you didn’t have enough money, and if you ever bought anything somewhere else, you hid the bag so he wouldn’t know.
What about phrases like:
- Takes one to know one…
- Whatever you say, it’s double…
- Two for flinching…
- You can’t make me. It’s a free country!
Remember being the blackboard monitor and clapping the erasers together to get chalk dust on a kid you didn’t like?
What ever happened to Jaw Teasers, Tap Dancing, Penmanship, Penny Loafers, Penny Candy or even Pennies?
Crepe paper! Stretching it, twisting it, hanging it all over the place!
Did you eat fish on Friday and keep a piece of bread nearby in case you swallowed a bone?
Tiny bottles of candy made of wax. Drink the syrup then chew the wax. Ugh!
I miss them all, and I’ll never forget ‘em!
