When I think of moving and/or downsizing, it conjures up images of over eleven moves from the time I was 19 years old and making my first move to California to our last move from Washington to Nevada.
Yes, it’s exciting to think about the next steps and decorating your new home. It’s also very overwhelming for many people, and the thought of moving can literally scare people away.
Once the decision is made to move, now comes the issues of what stays and what goes? For a number of people, deciding on what clothes to take to your new home will be determined by the climate in which you live. For my husband and I, we were moving from four seasons to basically two here in Nevada.
Looking at the 5 heavy coats that have traveled from Massachusetts to Washington to California, was going to be a space detractor. So four coats were eliminated and keeping just one for if a return to a colder climate was necessary.
Downsizing 20 sweaters to 5 was more than adequate. This elimination helped provide space for warmer attire to take its place.
The process of eliminating unnecessary clothing became easier as packing the boxes became heavier. What could have been 40 boxes of clothing, (plus costs to move them) was reduced to ten with mostly golf attire, and warm weather clothing inside.
Believe me as a Fashionista, this was very hard to do; however, I also knew we were downsizing with less closets than our previous larger home. If a major move or even a minor move is in your future, remember a few key things:
- Climate at your new location
- Size of your future dwelling and
- Closet space in general. Â
All in all, this process will provide less stress, and in the end, create a more harmonious experience for all involved.
