We’re Not Animals

The ordeals of the homeless are getting worse – much worse! I’m not talking about the conventional line of thinking that paints a picture of the hard knocks of being on the street.

Examples include – Where are they going to “live” or how do they to handle “normal” daily hygiene care or even their next meal etc.

What I’m talking about is cruelty! A recent published story stated that many are now publicly ridiculing the homeless. Examples include – “Get a life”, “We taxpayers are fed up with you.”

Even saying, “You’re better off dead!”

Sadly this despicable behavior is escalating. Those that are homeless and were willing to respond to this contemptuous behaviors have said, “We’re doing the best we can. We’re not animals!”

I acknowledge that some homeless do so by choice. However, they are the exception and not the rule!

Most of the homeless are on the streets because they had no choice! Either their families “evicted them” or have succumbed to harmful addictions.

The recent heat wave that seems to have exasperated the problem. Tempers are flaring, which most of us witness and experience when we are waiting too long for a traffic light to change or reckless drivers, etc.

We all need to step back and reflect on what compassion we can bring to those in need. They are people for god’s sake! And no they are not expendable!

By doing so we can disengage our own mental thoughts of  anger. I admit, it is not an easy task.

But somewhere, sometime, someone must take the first step – why not you?

Speaking of compassion; there is an organization that lives by that motto and does a remarkable job at helping the homeless. The non-profit is called H.E.L.P. – Help of Southern Nevada.

They assist families and individuals throughout Southern Nevad to overcome barriers and attain self-sufficiency. Their website: helpsonv.org.

If our senior community would contribute $15 per month to this worthy organization they could, over time, eradicate the homeless problem for all who seek assistance.

At some point in everyone’s life, we all need HELP with some life issue. Why not support an organization that HELP’s those who need it every day!
