We Boomers Are Plucky

We Boomers Are Plucky

Welcome to my new column! I’m Marnie Macauley — relationship expert, writer, speaker, TV personality (several of them), and founder of Strategic Relationship Thinking (SRT), a method I call Relationship Triage.

And yes, I’m a humorist. So let’s get to know each other the only way that makes sense: through laughter.

We Boomers are plucky. Maybe it’s because we grew up hearing, “Hey kids, a bomb might drop tomorrow! Hide under your desks!”

Born when turning on a TV required a learning curve, we’ve survived mini-skirts, polio shots, assassinations, space flight, Dr. Spock, terrorism, and now cyberspace.

I wonder: How do we know we’ve gone from relevant to Boomer-ranged? How’s this:

From Peppy to Pooped-Out Boomer

1. Death as a Trend We’ve gone from wine spritzers to obituary influencers. “Wait! Wasn’t he dead in 2017?”

2. Getting Stuck Entering an SUV requires a pulley system. Exiting? Parachute optional.

3. Meandering Our peripheral vision pooped out causing the occasional “cart” accidents.

4. Did You Hear? Our TV can be heard in “Uruguay? Our grandson whispers, “Use your indoor voice, gram.” We shout, “I am indoors!”

5. Why? “I dialed a number? I’m in the kitchen? I’m in the bathroom? Why? Ahhhhhh …..”

6. You’re Invited! Mail is from AARP, Discrete Diapers, BBQ lunch briefings hosted by Ol’ Smokey Cremations.

7. Napping We call each other: “I’ll call you back—I’m napping.” We hang up. And nap.

But unlike our juvies, we’ve earned it. We’ve lived, loved, and launched revolutions in music, fashion, and thought.

Like the song says: “I’m still here.” And not just here … bolder and still kicking butt (between naps).

Next Month: We’ve tackled aging. Now let’s talk rage-ing. Stay tuned for a rant. Meanwhile, I’m napping.
