I walk 5-7 miles a day and I’ve done this for more than 840 days! It’s an addiction of sorts — but the way I look at it, it feels like a healthy addiction.
Before this walking addiction started, I used to run and I found this time by myself to be healing in many ways. It was not only a time to work out my body but also to empty and cleanse my mind.
At the same time, as I pass people on the streets, in the parks, or on the paths, I have always looked others in the eye, smiling and saying, “Hello!” Until recently, people seemed to enjoy joining me in this moment of passing friendliness.
But lately I notice less and less people willing to make eye contact and share the moment. I wonder why is that?
I notice people walking/running/biking with less joy, and more weight in their stride. I notice less people looking up and around, and more people hunched over with almost a grimace on their faces.
Where I used to feel a connection to others who were outdoors, I now feel more separate.
I guess I could follow the lead of others, keeping my head down, shoulders slouched, face in a grimace, sharing no interaction…but what good would that do for my spirit, or for the spirit of others? Many times, it seems like it would be easier to simply give in and follow their lead.
But is that really the best thing?
What can we do to make things better in a world where it feels like we don’t have the power to change anything? All I can think of is to do my best to lead with LOVE.
Look up and see the beauty with gratitude in our hearts. Look around, smiling at and greeting all who pass by – whether it is reciprocated or not.
Breathe deep and do our best to walk with good posture, welcoming good health into our beings. Hope for the same in the lives of others.
Yes, all I can think of is to do my best to lead with LOVE!
