Unconditional Love Defined

Unconditional Love Defined

The older I get, the more amazed I am at the unconditional love one gets from a dog.

A dog has no agenda. A dog spends all of his time observing everything you do. That’s their job.

What drives me nuts and also makes me happy is how much people love dogs more than people. When the partner in your life wants to cuddle the dog, can’t sleep without a doggie pillow and all-around makes cooing noises to the dog, I know I haven’t got a chance.

If he isn’t greeted with a squeaky toy every time he walks in the door, he worries she’s not feeling well. Or worse yet, she doesn’t think the sun rises and sets with him anymore.

Then the little ones come running (if they’re not in puppy jail) and the big ones trample them. They’ve gotten pretty good at getting out of the way I must say. No flying fur or startled yips to date.

Every little wiggle, noise and wag has a special meaning. They talk to us in doggy-speak and we have to take 40 guesses of what they said. By the time we figure it out, they’re bored and lie down.

Morning rituals consist of jumping all over me between 6-7am, going out and then getting fed. When it’s my turn for breakfast, they all line up at my desk and wait to see what’s next.

The big one gets to lick the yogurt cup and then everyone gets a little piece of my muffin. I clap my hands and off they go to their respective hangouts.

It’s so simple for them. Food, love and routine make them happy while the rest of us worry about everything! They don’t pay the bills, wash the dishes or have any responsibilities to worry about.

We teach them tricks and they wag their tails so hard they almost fall over! My dogs are most definitely my therapy. One magical look from their sweet faces and I smile and relax. We need them to remind us to love.
