Two Places for Great Sandwiches: Cheba Hut and Sourdough and Co.

Summer is a great time to enjoy a great sandwich and the valley is full of places to savor them. Cheba Hut has a 60’s vibe with the employees gleefully decked out in tie dye. Scott Jennings began making the fare in 1998 and the menu now features thirty choices.

One of my favorites is Apollo 13 that is an enticing combination of grilled chicken breast, garlic butter, kalamata olives, feta, spring mix, tomato, onion and pickle. A fitting Greek dressing drenches the offering. It is a messy sandwich, so I don’t recommend trying to eat it in the car. Use a lot of napkins. White Widow is a winner with chicken, bacon, ranch, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato and onion.

There are more than sandwiches here as the munchies menu is innovative. Cool Ranch Doritos Not Chos (pun intended) have melted cheddar cheese, jalapeno, onions and black olives. Pretzel Nuggets are soft for the mouth and each one is tossed in garlic butter, salted and shaken. Honey mustard is an appropriate dipping sauce.

Garlic cheese bread is shareable and features cheddar and provolone cheeses. Marinara and ranch are fine for dipping.

Other than cookies you usually don’t find much variety with desserts in sandwich shops but at Cheba tasty rice krispy cereal bites are made with marshmallows. A Goo Ball has peanut butter, cocoa, honey, butter and marshmallows.

Not too many places feature Kool Aid but it is popular along with the usual list of fountain drinks.

Good sourdough bread is the mainstay at Sourdough and Company with locations throughout the valley. Another warning…the sandwiches are some of the messiest you will find so once again find a spot to pull over.

A recent sampling of the #13 Garlic Pesto was a testament to what they are all about. Thinly sliced turkey breast is accompanied with aioli and a host of other ingredients like tomato, lettuce and gooey sauce.

The Italian is testament to that country with pepperoni, dry salami, mozzarella cheese, balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

They also feature flatbreads, and the veggie version is awash with fresh peppers, mushrooms, onions and artichokes with a blend of cheese plus tomato spread. Other picks include mushroom, Italian, barbecue chicken and artichoke chicken.

Different soups are featured throughout the week including cream of potato on Wednesdays and chili on Fridays.

Salads? No problem. A southwest chicken salad offering has both baby greens and chopped romaine, grilled chicken, sliced avocado, black bean, corn, salsa, sour cream, tortilla strips and jalapeno ranch dressing.

An attractive Cobb has all of the things that make them good including a sliced hard-boiled egg, crumbled gorgonzola and blue cheese dressing.

One of the unusual sides is mac and cheese and this version is delivered with two slices of sourdough bread.

When you are looking for creative sandwiches, both Cheba Hut and Sourdough and Co. fit the bill.
