One of the most-asked questions I get when talking to folks about restaurants in Las Vegas is, “Have you been to Golden Steer?” Even though I have lived in the valley for twelve years I had not visited the place until recently. And I can’t wait to go back.
The restaurant has been open since 1958. It started as a small dwelling and has expanded several times since. In fact, their latest addition took place in the last couple of years.
The interior is ‘retro’ with the look of a western roadhouse with lots of pictures of celebrities that have visited. There is a table where Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack pals used to hang out.
Appetizers follow the playbook of a classic steakhouse with a king crab cocktail, escargots du Bourgogne, which are a house specialty, and fried calamari. Seafood stuffed mushroom caps are another choice.
A cold seafood tower is great for the whole table with Alaska king crab, jumbo gulf shrimp, oysters and Maine lobster. When it is time to order steak a large list of favorites is available. A 24-ounce Porterhouse is enough for two along with a rib eye with bone-in weighing in at a pound and a half.
You might want to consider dinners for two. Included is a 40-ounce tomahawk that comes with a choice of soup or salad and a selection of two sides.

Even though steaks are the star there are several other options including seafood like bowtie Atlantic salmon and Chilean seabass. Surf and turf will also fill you up.
Italian specialties are not forgotten as three options prevail. Chicken of the Angels features boneless breast of chicken that is dipped in egg batter and smothered with artichokes and mushrooms. Chicken and egg parmigiana editions are also ready to be ordered.
I have always thought that creative side dishes make a great steakhouse. And here you will find good quality and memorable tastes. For instance, Vegas’ largest baked potato is just that – a gigantic spud that will keep you occupied as you scoop the perfectly cooked insides into your mouth.
You can also order whipped potatoes. A very satisfying macaroni and cheese option is popular along with a cousin that features prime beef sitting on top. No matter what you choose you won’t go wrong with these sides.
There are two desserts that aren’t served much anymore: bananas foster and cherries jubilee. Both are prepared tableside and you won’t want to miss them. Enjoy the flambe show. Other sweet delights include cocoa Kahlua crème brulee, strawberry cheesecake and tiramisu.
There are a few steakhouses that also have beef you can order to go and that is the case here. A set of four 16-ounce New York steaks can be sent to your home and prepared in your oven. Shipping is free.
You can also find traditional cocktails that reflect the ambiance of the place.
Tradition and great food come together at Golden Steer.
