Time to Replace Tires?

Time to Replace Tires?

Automotive technology is moving fast. Self-driving cars, vehicle connectivity, and safety advancements are progressing at the speed of light.

One of those technologies that get little attention, however, is tires. With all the tech available, those round, black things that support your vehicle are probably the most important because without them you aren’t going anywhere.

Another fact about tires is that at any one time while driving, the only thing connecting you to the road are four small, palm-size patches of rubber that make contact as you roll.

It’s December, and while we don’t get crazy amounts of snow here often (some of you may remember Snowfest 2008), we do get our share of rain, which means you need tires that can handle winter weather. Besides checking your windshield wipers, checking your tire tread is vital this time of year.

Tires should be inspected once a month anyway for air pressure, nicks, cuts and foreign objects like nails or screws, but now is the time to check tread depth. On average, tires should be replaced every 40,000-50,000 miles.

It’s easy to check; all you need is a penny. To check if you need new rubber, place a penny upside down (with Lincoln’s head facing you) between the treads on the tire.

If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, it’s time for new shoes. The less tread you have on your tires, the higher your chances of slipping and sliding on water, snow, and even gravel.

Tires are available online, at your dealership, and specialty tire shops. Remember that tires need to be balanced, aligned and inflated properly.

Ask your tire specialist which tire is best for your vehicle, although most just replace what is currently on their vehicle. It’s not just about mounting new ones, so be sure to get your tires changed at a reputable shop.

Even lug nuts that aren’t replaced on the tire properly with enough torque can come loose and cause a crash. New tires provide a better ride, improved fuel efficiency, and above all, peace of mind.
