The Sock Fairy

The Sock Fairy

In these days of mergers and expansions, let’s not forget the Sock Fairy.

In years past, she only took socks from the dryer but now she has a whole staff of intern fairies all over my house moving things and hiding them. Once they finish their training, they get promoted to the dryer.

Sock Fairies are very resourceful. They put things under the dresser, in the wrong part of the kitchen and generally in places you will never look until after you’ve bought a new pair of whatever it is.

If you listen very carefully, you can hear them laughing at you while you’re marching around the whole house grumbling in search of your stuff.

We also now have different Fairy Departments. There’s the Keys Fairy and the Glasses Fairy who time everything according to how late they want to make you for your next appointment.

Of course everyone knows you need your glasses to find your glasses. I found mine in the refrigerator once.

When it comes to keys, most of us have car keys attached to our purses or pockets so if you don’t also attach your house and mailbox keys, the search can delay you. I don’t care much for the mailbox but if the garage door battery dies, I definitely will need my house key.

Then there’s the Paper Fairy. She moves all the “Lists of Things To Do” you carefully placed on the desk. She hides the bills and confuses the situation by rearranging the order of the piles.

It takes another 30 minutes to sort it out so you leave it for tomorrow. In the meantime, the list is probably in the dryer anyway.

My sister had a double problem years ago. She had a beautiful, exotic cat named Marvin who was attracted to jewelry.

If she left anything out, Marvin put it away and the great search began. But Marvin hid things in the fireplace and so it took a while!

She got wise eventually. We think he was friends with the Sock Fairy.
