The Pitt

End of Year Tips

My column is called “My First Impression” because I give you my first impression (and review) of a new television series based on just the first episode.

The television series is called The Pitt airing on HBO Max. With 13 Emmy nominations and season two starting in January 2026, I decided to try it now.

The Pitt stars Noah Wyle (who played a doctor on ER 16+ years ago) as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, the senior doctor in a fictional Pittsburgh hospital’s emergency department. There are many other doctors (including med students and new interns on their first day), plus some nurses.

Noah Wyle was the only actor I recognized. But all of the actors are fantastic! Each episode is one hour of the day.

I never watched medical dramas because I don’t like bloody scenes. The Pitt has those, so occasionally I looked away from the TV despite some compelling medical cases.

Plus, there were so many medical terms I didn’t understand that I ignored those words and instead focused on how urgently the actors said them.

One thing I did not expect was the show having some genuine moments of dark humor which made me laugh out loud more than once. So despite some icky blood and many complex medical terms, the excellent actors, absorbing drama, and the funny moments make this a very entertaining show!

I give this first episode of The Pitt 8 out of 10 stars!
