Taking Care of the “Girls”

Breasts, boobs, tatas… whatever you choose to call them (and names are abundant) the question remains: Can they age you?

While youthful breasts are often considered “perky”, a grandmother’s breasts would most likely not be expected to be overly perky. Years of gravity and perhaps well-used body parts for nourishing babies, words like hanging or droopy may replace perky.

Fast forward to my glance in the mirror one day, and I had the realization that I had my grandmother’s boobs.

That wasn’t a bad thing, I loved my grandmother and always thought she was beautiful, but I was a bit surprised at that discovery.

While I never had anything near perky, I only recently noticed even that part of my body had very obvious signs of age. I nursed 6 children and wouldn’t change one minute of it, but it has taken its toll.

Recently, to have my clothes fit better, I have been hiking my straps up as high as they would go, but even that wasn’t quite doing the trick anymore. My cup was running over.

This isn’t about bra or cup size. What I realized is there’s a lot of extra skin I’m hoisting into those cups.

A bigger cup just made me look bigger and wider than normal, but a smaller cup squished things together. And then there was that extra loose wrinkly skin. So, I went bra hunting!

What I found that makes a big difference for me is a minimizer bra. I have a couple, but the Vanity Fair, non-padded, is my favorite. The straps stay secure, its comfortable, and it also has underwires, which I like. For about $30. I gave my body 10 years of its youth back.

For me, wearing a minimizer bra isn’t because I’m unhappy with my breast size, they have been this size for over 50 years. My goal was to gather them all up and have them fit back where they used to be. My clothes fit better, and I think the overall look is better because it draws your eye up, not down to my waist, where no one wants to see boobs.

Having had a couple of lumpectomies, I’m very appreciative of still having what I have and will continue to take care of “the girls” to the best of my ability.
