Among the many organizations I love collaborating with is Pet Partners of Las Vegas/Love Dog Adventures, a local pet therapy group that regularly visits schools, hospitals, colleges, and other settings where they help reduce stress and spread joy. The program is dedicated to inspiring physical and emotional healing through interactive animal-assisted therapy and community education.
This remarkable group was on site at the Lied Library on the UNLV campus on December 6, 2023, when an active shooter entered the premises, resulting in the tragic loss of life. The therapy teams were included in the lockdown and, impressively, everyone remained calm—including the dogs.
While awaiting further instructions from LVMPD and SWAT, university staff and students were able to benefit from the presence of the therapy teams. Animal-assisted crisis response is among the services this organization is trained to provide, and the animals behaved so exceptionally well that even law enforcement took notice.
Founder Sue Grundfest runs a tight ship, ensuring that all dogs are properly assessed, trained, and thoughtfully scheduled for visits. Despite being busy and in high demand, she has always accommodated my requests whether for school presentations or visits to the Pahrump Disability Outreach Program, which supports children with disabilities and their families.
One such visit took place several years ago, and it was a wonderful experience discussing compassion for animals and responsible pet ownership. Everyone loved interacting with the furry rock stars of the day – myself included.
