Louie Frias is a Certified Veterans Benefits Consultant and lives in Henderson. From 1981 to 1986, he helped more than 300 Veterans, and their families, purchase homes. After four decades in the real estate, insurance, and financial services segments, he was introduced to another way to help – through the SOS Veterans Assistance program.
SOS Veterans Assistance is the parent company of a grassroots non-profit organization in Las Vegas and New York that is a boots-on-the-ground service to reach our homeless population of Veterans to help them get the resources they need, up to, and including, their disability benefits. This interview is aimed at expanding public awareness of programs for Veterans.
Vet2Vet: Can you explain to our readers the mission of the SOS Veterans Assistance program?
Louie Frias: It is centered on education. Once options are understood, one can be more informed about making the right choices for a better life.
Vet2Vet: What are some of the resources that you provide for homeless veterans?
Frias: We have many which are mostly hidden away – out of reach for veterans to find. Through partner resources and community shelters, we open the access to job training, interim housing, additional health, and mental health care.
Vet2Vet: There is a certain process you use to administer assistance to veterans. What is that process?
Frias: Homeless and non-homeless have access to the same benefits offered by the VA. Getting them is the uphill battle. We have found that by providing free, and thorough consultations are vital to evaluate each Veteran’s story so as to prepare a complete submission to the Department of Vets Affairs.
Vet2Vet: For our veterans that are NOT homeless, what are some of the services you provide to assist them?
Frias: Free consultation with a former VA appeals attorney is provided. Once the consult concludes, a much better view of success can be seen.
Vet2Vet:Â So, what makes SOS different, and why do you think it is the best option for veterans when seeking assistance?
Frias:Â SOS is a full-service concierge model. We remove 90% of the work required by the Veteran that others in this space do not. We want our Veterans to continue living their lives while we work to help them in the background. They served for us, now we serve for them.
