Social Security is one of our nation’s crowning achievements. A safety net to ensure that retirement is feasible; our seniors’ golden years are spent comfortably; and that medical protections are extended to those in need, the Social Security Act ensures the financial protection of tens of millions of Americans.
It is also, unfortunately, under attack.
While President Donald Trump has promised that he will not attack social security benefits, he has broken that promise. He has allowed DOGE, the pseudo-governmental agency run by Elon Musk, to decimate some of the integral services offered by the Social Security Administration.
These changes include a proposed 15% cut to the SSA’s workforce; the complete elimination of phone services; and the removal field offices around the country, including a Las Vegas SSA office set to close in June.
Without phone services, Nevadans who benefit from Social Security must perform any transactions that require proof of identity either online or in-person, even if they live in one of our state’s rural or frontier communities. With in-person services also at risk and, for many Nevadans, hundreds of miles away, solving problems or fixing disruptions will be much more difficult.
I want to make sure that does not happen.
In order to protect these services, however, I need your help. My office has recently created a form on our website where Nevadans can report any disruptions to their Social Security payments in the aftermath of these burdensome changes.
The information that my office collects from this form will be saved and could be used as evidence in future potential litigation. I will take any legal steps available and necessary in order to protect Nevadans from being abandoned by the services that their country is bound to provide them.
Part of the duty that a government owes to its citizens is that it will not work to make their lives harder. Unfortunately, making Social Security benefits harder to access completely disregards that duty.
I promise you, though, that I have your back in this fight, and I will do anything within my power to ensure these programs that Americans rely on are protected to the fullest extent of the law.
