A place I have always loved to go, not too far from San Francisco, is Big Sur. You can roam through the giant Red Wood trees and enjoy the calm and breathe in sweet fresh air as you walk. And of course, the tress. The beautiful, gigantic trees seem to reach up and touch the sky.
I have never thought of myself as a “tree hugger.” Perhaps that is one of the reasons I get so annoyed when I see many businesses no longer using paper bags, or worse charging customers for them while claiming the need to save the environment and trees.
Notwithstanding all of the above, when I retrieve my mail every month there is a wasteful “slap in the face” when reaching for the envelope and bill from Cox Communications. As you can see, the large envelope contains many standard pages.
Worst of all, the font size is a big WOW. I don’t know the exact size but we can all agree, that every senior can read it without their glasses!
I couldn’t resist the urge one day last month, so I phoned Cox and asked for a customer service representative. I counted out the pages I received in the monthly “package” and asked her to guess how many clients Cox had in Southern Nevada. “Huh! Why do you ask” she replied.
My response was “each time I receive your bill I try to guess how many trees Cox has killed with the use of so much paper. Additionally, your company adds insult to injury, by using a font size so large. It sure does appear that Cox assumes all their customers are seconds away from total loss of sight!”
To top this all off, with this month’s bill, my frustration turned to laughter as I read a tiny paragraph on the front of the statement that said, “Make your life easier and GO GREEN”! With paperless billing you get rid of paper bills and can access your account online any time, all while saving trees! You can even view up to 18 months of statement history. Sign up today at …
With this kind of hypocrisy (or stupidly) I just might become a tree-hugger yet!
