In the November issue I wrote about our impending River cruise along the Rhine River on Viking Cruise Line. Well, mission accomplished.
We toured and cruise through Switzerland, Germany, France and the Netherlands from October 21st until November 2nd. Simply stated, the trip was absolutely wonderful.
River cruising is a 180 degree opposite experience from what big ships (think our Bus to the Boat cruises) are about. There are no Broadway style theatres on a River ship. There are no spas or big gyms. There aren’t even any shopping “malls” on a river ship.
In fact, there were only 180 passengers on the ship. There was a nice “small” lounge on the river ship.
Just enough room to sit comfortably and enjoy an evening piano concert or maybe a mini chamber music concerto. The lounge also doubled as the lecture area for our upcoming port calls.
The port calls and included shore excursions were the centerpiece of the river cruise. Every day we were in a different city along the Rhine River.
We visited Zurich and Basal in Switzerland, Speyer, Heidelberg, Koblenz, Rüdesheim and Cologne in Germany, Strasbourg and Colmer in France and finally ended up in Amsterdam. And in every port we had an included shore excursion.
The river cruise was a truly immersive experience with long visits in each port. By 10 pm each night we were back in our stateroom having enjoyed a fabulous dinner and quiet onboard evening activity. We needed a good night’s rest to be ready for the next day’s adventure.
We enjoyed every moment of our River cruise and heartily recommend this form of cruising to all our Vegas Voyagers.
A Happy and Health New Year to all.
