Who would have ever thought that Miucci Prada would have been designing a suit for NASA. Well, I’m here to say that indeed Prada has been commissioned to design the next space suit for NASA.
What’s really interesting – this is the first luxury line to make its way into the space industry arena. As a diehard Fashionista, this is music to my ears!
The new space suit with special liquid cooling and ventilation features is anticipated to be used for NASA’s Artemis 4 moon landing in 2028. As luxury brands have struggled in recent years, an opportunity to partner with NASA will provide a lot of traction and will help such brands as Prada stay relevant and visible, in the public domain.
As many buyers tend to lean more towards the sale brands, second hand stores or “buy only if you need it mode” of thinking, this exciting news may jumpstart an already struggling industry. Under Armour has partnered with Virgin Galactic to create space clothing. Columbia Sportswear has recently worked with Intuitive Machines, to help develop fabric for clothing in space.
This begs the question, will other luxury brands follow in the footsteps of Prada? Maybe or maybe not? The general rule for such luxury brands is to be first in design and not copy the lead of another fashion company.
I must say the news of fashion luxury brands going into space is almost too exciting to fathom. As a child one of my favorite shows was Lost in Space. The suits the family wore were very state of the art and in my opinion, well beyond thought for this kid’s mind.
Like many things in life, we are constantly evolving and changing. Learning new ideas and ways to create the latest and greatest technology for the future.
As Neil Armstrong said many years ago as he stepped onto the Moon’s surface. “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
