Finally it's Over

The Vegas Voice
By: “Lenny Musings”

The other evening, Governor Sandoval called me.

I was eating dinner and was very surprised by the call. I immediately thought what a great opportunity to ask him a couple of questions as some things had been bothering me lately.

However, he went on and on, seeming to ignore me, until I realized it was just another political recorded phone message.

Then just today, I received a robo call from the wife of a candidate who started by saying, “I don’t like robo calls either so I’ll make this brief.” I guess that’s one way to apologize for interrupting me, but a better way would be not to call at all.

This all got me thinking about the Federal Do Not Call List. I thought it was a great idea when it was started a few years ago - with the exception that politicians could still call.

Now it seems that most anyone calls me, without regard to the fact that I have my name on the list.

There was one situation that lasted for several months. I began receiving a call from a carpet cleaner who called me once or more times every day.

Since I couldn’t get his phone number, I was unable to report him to the Do Not Call people.  Eventually he stopped calling.

There are several things that I do now since I can’t get the people to stop calling. If I don’t recognize the number, (hurrah for caller ID), I answer the phone but don’t say anything.

I found that by doing this, the recorded message doesn’t start.  Another way I have of handling these calls is to click the connect button and immediately click the disconnect button.

But perhaps the thing that gives me the most pleasure is when I answer the phone but put it down, letting the person or recording go on until I hear the beep, beep, beep that indicates I need to hand up my phone. The advantage of this is that the caller cannot make another call until the beeping starts.

That’s when we’re finally disconnected. I figure the more I do this, the less calls they can make – thank you very much.

Do these things do any good? I doubt it - except that it makes me feel good.

I’ll be glad when the elections are over so I can go back to hearing about getting my carpets cleaned. I have tile and hardwood floors
