I Love Blogging

The gang here at The Vegas Voice just never seems to stop coming up with fun ideas but we need to hear from you, our readers to know if you think they are as great as we do.

President Ray got this brainstorm, I think because he is really into big bands himself, that we should be having some fun and producing a BIG BAND DANCE NIGHT. We all loved the idea and started to polish it and make the idea even better. How does this sound?  Buffet dinner, dancing to LIVE big band music, for $19.95 per person. It sounded swell to me… See I’m even throwing myself back in time with the “jargon”…. But then I asked publisher Dan “what about locations, you know what they say, location, location, location! “
“What is we spread it around, one month Henderson, one month Summerlin, one month in the middle”… ?

Now we need answers from you. Please click the comment section and let us know what you think.

How many of you enjoy shopping and browsing the various shops and restaurants at the district? I know I do, especially in the spring and summer time when they have the music in the evenings.  As a grandmother I get to enjoy everyone else’s little children running and jumping like lunatics on the spongy play area without needing to discipline anyone.

I have always loved to roam freely, stopping here and there to pet a dog or two, chat with strangers and friends I might see while I shop, but now it seems things will change drastically. The Districts has been sold and the new owners have gone to the Henderson Planning Commission, to make it a DRIVE THROUGH AREA. The Planning Commission approved it with only Sean Fellows voting NO, next it goes to Henderson City Council February 5th.  If the public does not take a stand and make a big noise I have no doubt that the council will approve it too.

If you feel as I do, write Mayor Hafen or your councilman and say so or better yet, show up on the 5th.

I hope everyone had a fabulous Valentine’s Day, I certainly did. There are a few things I wanted to clue you all in on, the first being what happened at city hall in regards to the District and opening it to traffic.

There were about 30 to 35 people at the council meeting that wished to speak in objection to this issue. When the Mayor was handed the stack of yellow cards that ordered the item pulled from the consent agenda, he announced that long ago, before the District had been built, it was zones for through traffic. It seems the developer opted not to do that and created the lovely area we have all enjoyed over the years. He explained that the ONLY option the council had that night was passing parallel or curb side parking.

You could hear all the grumbling throughout the council chambers because no one seemed to have “received that memo”. Everyone who made the trip downtown went, one by one to the podium and spoke their mind anyway.

I made my remarks directed to the new owners, telling them that, “cars driving right up to the shops was not going to solve the problem of lack of business in the District”. All they had to do was pay attention to the other side behind the Cheese Cake Factory and Whole Foods to see that. Those shops have always struggled for clients. What is needed is to move the monument sign from in front of the parking garage where it does no good at all and place it on Green Valley Parkway. Shoppers driving by need to know what stores are located in the District and unless someone frequents the area they do not know this. The signs that have been there for years simply say “The District at Green Valley”.

To make a long story short, the vote was cast and it looks like that beautiful place will be torn up soon leaving a drive through where there are now pretty lighted trees and a traffic free zone to roam from shop to shop while children play and dogs sit and watch. WHAT A SHAME!

I just returned from Carson City last night and will have so much to report on for the April issue, but don't worry, much will be placed on this page by this afternoon. I sat in on so many hearings it made my head swim.

I'm a few days late in getting back, but here I am. One of the bills that seemed to be kicking up the most dust was AB 34, a bill sponsored by the Real Estate Division for common interest communities better knows as HOAs. Most of the bill, in my opinion is pretty good for homeowners with a little fix here and there. However, it took a real beating from the management companies and the lawyers who make their living off of the associations so it looks like that bill will be going back to the drawing board and will back with many amendments shortly.

Several legislators that I spoke with said that they were hoping more homeowners would be heard from on bills of this type and felt it was a let down that such important legislation didn't get attention of individuals before the bill is passed or killed. "real people" feel not just lobbyist and special interests.

There is another bill that I am watching and will post the number of soon. Ths is a bill to establish a state wide veteran's court. Thank to Judge Mark Stevens we have oone in Henderson and there is one I understand in North Las Vegas, but this bill will form them across Nevada.

The veteran's court helps vets who might be having a hard time djusting to life after returning stateside. Judge Stevens says "a lot of them have just falled on hard times, we help them get back on track".
