In last month’s edition, I detailed my plight with my dad’s end of life issues along with the “Death with Dignity” movement.
Under several different names, this type of bill has seen much controversy. Basically it provides for one to be allowed to end his/her life when their medical condition (as determined by two physicians) is such that they have less than six months to live.
I believe that such advocacy should be supported by The Vegas Voice but (as usual) publisher Dan disagreed. He did not want to undertake such a controversial position that would upset a substantial portion of our readers.
Dan was however, willing to meet with a representative of the national Death with Dignity non-profit organization. At that meeting we were told, among other things, that based on their polling, Nevada residents favor such bill by a 70-30 ratio.
That was reason for me to go forward but Dan still was unsure – hence the survey last month.
After much discussion, we reached a compromise as to whether to go forward:
1. The Vegas Voice had to receive 500 responses, be it by mail or email.
2. The ratio for Death with Dignity had to be 75-25% for such a law in Nevada.
3. All responses had to be received at the end of 2 months – Labor Day weekend.
As of this writing we have received a number of responses. I am not disclosing the number received or the percentages since I do not want to influence anyone – be it for or against.
Dan and I (as well as our entire Vegas Voice family) also want to quickly add that for those who would favor or oppose such a law, we understand and respect your belief and feelings unconditionally.
With all this in mind, Publisher Dan and I would just like to get a sense as to what readers believe. What do you think? Should The Vegas Voice support such a law?
I am requesting that if you have any opinion or feelings on this challenging issue, please take (only) 2 minutes to let us know.
Please feel free to complete the survey and mail to us or complete on our homepage website: thevegasvoice.net.
I’ll have the final results in the September issue.
