![]() From: Dan Roberts/Publisher The Vegas Voice I was really hoping I was wrong. That was my statement when I gathered my Vegas Voice family to discuss this month’s special edition. Working with our sister non-profit Nevada Association to Stop Guardian & Elder Abuse we wanted to devote a “Special Edition” of this publication to our Guardianship Fundraiser event.

![]() In the past year, while reporting and working on the guardianship mess, we have often spoken of Jared Shafer and the fact that the man seems to have an angel in the system protecting him from prosecution for his lack of fiduciary responsibility in guarding his clients (wards) estates. We have focused on seniors, but he has had young wards too. This story, that was discussed Friday at the commission meeting, is the continuing saga of a 26 year old Cerebral Palsy victim whose grandmother and father left him well provided for. Sadly, Jared Shafer, Jon Norheim, the guardianship court commissioner at the time, and the trustee undid all the family's plans. What was that old adage, "best laid plans of mice and men".......? Read on folks... Oh! and remember that Ms. Tyrell states early on that she volunteered to work for Jason "pro-bono", but later there are attorney fees... huh? [i]Thanks to Steve Miller for permission to run his story.
Chief Investigator Darcy Spears of Contact 13 has picked up the story of the couple we wrote about in our February issue. We are grateful to see that this story is getting more attention as we have been working hard on the Nevada Legislature to get needed changes to occur.
READ MORE FOR VIDEO ![]() My biggest question while getting ready to head for Carson City, and in addressing the guardianship seminars Dan and I have been asked to present is: How do private guardians find their wards? We already knew several ways and had discussed them at our seminars; people giving out too much information at financial planning meetings, loose-lipped caregivers who tip off guardians, house cleaning staff, “well meaning” neighbors and so on. Dan and I have searched for the common denominator by connecting some of these victims together. Well, we found one, and it should have been clear as day. Perhaps it was, and that was why we didn’t see it before - it was there in plain sight. ![]() By: Dan Roberts – Publisher & Editor Her name is April Parks and she is the "poster child" why the Nevada guardianship laws must be changed. Her M.O. as a private for-profit guardian is to do everything possible in separating family and squeezing every last dime from her acquired "ward.” Although her actions are disgraceful, they are perfectly legal. She must be stopped - since you, or your loved one might be her next victim. Over the past few months, The Vegas Voice has reviewed and investigated this obscene (but very lucrative) guardianship industry. During this time, political editor Rana Goodman and yours truly have met with families torn apart by these private guardians - starting with Ms. Parks. ![]() Vegas Voice Political Editor Rana Goodman leads the discussion concerning the Nevada guardianship abuses at Sun City MacDonald Ranch on Saturday, March 14th. Before a packed meeting room, Rana discussed the perils of Guardianship. The Vegas Voice will be holding seminars over the next few months around the valley.
