I spent a good part of May 1st watching the news and reading articles regarding the May Day protests in many U.S. cities.
I heard journalists proclaim their excitement at the large turnout of individuals and lauding the call for students to join in the gatherings. Individuals interviewed at the scene condemned capitalism and praised the Unions.
Aside from the fact that May Day has historically been a labor commemoration with state propaganda in the Soviet Union, celebrating socialist ideology, I see three contradictory issues.
First, there is the matter of the funding for these protests. It appears that much of the financial assistance comes either from failed Communist States or from billionaires.
I wonder why a billionaire, and some non-U.S. residents would want to lament the very system that helped them get where they are financially. Of course, I also am confused why folks would want to emulate a system that has already failed in so many countries.
Second, there is the issue of students being told to skip classes to join the protests – especially since we have the question of the capability of those very students’ reading abilities. There is no question of students’ poor showing results on standardized tests; with a large percentage of young folks failing to read on grade level.
From the “man on the street” interviews I have seen, they also fail to understand how many dimes are in a dollar or what countries border the U.S.
Finally, I chuckled at the New York City protestors on Wall Street. They were blocking the entrance to the New York Stock Exchange.
Their dear Unions that they applaud, invest in the stock market and in Treasury Bills, which is how they can make the union dues of the workers grow into pensions that those workers expect to enjoy when they retire.
It seems to me their energy would be better served not following like sheep the calls of those who only wish them ill and sadly using them for their own ends which is to cause havoc in the U.S.
Instead, they should be encouraging students to stay in school and learn how to read and finally, thank Wall Street for helping to provide hefty retirement funds.
However, there has arisen a new disease following the Covid pandemic. It is TDS, and that sickness trumps all common sense and ability to distinguish what is beneficial to one’s own prosperity and wellbeing. So I say, shout “May Day”, but not as a celebration of a soviet ideology but as a call for help for those brainwashed individuals.
