Mark Wahlberg’s Newest Restaurant

Mark Wahlberg’s Newest Restaurant

Famed actor Mark Wahlberg has certainly established himself in the valley. He is involved in making films locally and has also distinguished himself as a restaurateur. The Wahlburgers chain is growing and now he has launched Flecha by Mark Wahlberg at Town Square. And it is a winner. Traditional Mexican dishes are featured with a contemporary twist.

The décor is attractive with an expansive bar area that is a great spot for sports as monitors are mounted above for easy viewing. I sat at the bar on a recent Saturday afternoon and ordered from the lunch menu that features a shortened version of the dinner fare with some lower prices.

The appetizer list includes coconut shrimp with spicy lime sauce that is served in a fresh coconut half shell. Tableside guacamole includes diced tomatoes, cilantro, cotija cheese, red onion, roasted serrano with lime and orange juice. Pork belly flautas are also available.

A quartet of ceviches is inventive. Aguachile is a collection of shrimp, chile sauce, red onions, hot house cucumbers and avocado. Yellowtail is the highlight of the pescado edition.

Other options run the gamut from a California pita club to a veggie version with impossible chicken and pepitas. The cheese enchiladas are a fine choice. Monterey jack and chihuahua cheeses are wrapped inside white corn tortillas. On top is crème blanca, red sauce and picaeta. Rice and beans fill up the plate.

A burrito bowl is another favorite with rice, frijoles, lettuce, taquero sauce and pico de gallo. A trio of street tacos includes a choice of meats like chorizo, carne asada, chicken, shrimp or salmon.

The dinner menu is accented with specialties like chimichurri steak, braised short ribs, and a baby back rib plate with a bourbon barbecue sauce, spicy slaw and French fries.

Fans of fajitas will enjoy these picks as the choice of meats are accompanied with sauteed red bell pepper, chile, white onion and guacamole.

Yes, there is birria which is extremely popular everywhere. This version uses bone-in beef shank, cilantro, green onion, pico de gallo and more.

After a fitting meal you may want to make room for dessert. The sweet treats are led by Mexican tiramisu which includes chocolate mousse cake, cold brew chocolate sauce and mascarpone icing. Flan is part of the options along with fried ice cream with whipped cream, berry sauce and spicy lemon hart rum.

One of the fun things that happened when I entered was the hostess asked if I wanted to sample a free margarita. I happily said “Yes” and I’m glad I did. The fruity concoction was made with fresh juice and just the right amount of alcohol included. Not only do they have a nice list of margaritas but there are many tequilas to choose from including cocktails like the Jalisco Mule.

On Sundays enjoy an all you can eat buffet that is served from 9AM to 2PM.

Flecha is the newest addition to the fine Mexican dining in the valley. Hopefully it will be around for a long time.
