I realize not everyone is fond of horror films, but for those who watch our Vegas Voice Hollywood Memories video segments, I was surprised that of the 35+ segments, the ones about Lon Chaney and the movie Spider Baby have received the most views of any one of them!
It’s not for everyone, but Spider Baby is not your typical horror or slasher film. It’s a rather quirky, bizarre film that has been billed as a twisted low budget campy, horror/dark comedy.
It’s now classified a “cult classic” and has been on the Turner Classic film channel several times. The fan mail I have received from people have literally come from all over the world!

I know it’s strange, and to be honest I’m not even sure what the appeal is… and why people seem to love this film. It also happens to be one of Quentin Tarentino’s favorite films and it was Quentin who was instrumental in getting the film released after it sat on a shelf for many year.
For those who are horror fans, I’m sure you know who Rob Zombie is. He came out with the soundtrack of Spider Baby and I was fortunate to be placed on the cover, And inside the album there are several photos and an interview between Jack Hill (the writer, director), Rob Zombie and me.
Jill Banner who actually is “Spider Baby” was tragically killed in an auto accident. Sadly, other than Mary Mitchel (who played the secretary) I am the only cast member who is still alive from the movie.
Lon Chaney Jr. was a wonderful man and I was delighted to work with him. It’s very sad that he didn’t live long enough to see the popularity of it. Working on that film (which was made in 13 days) was one of my favorite movies and I truly loved everyone in the cast.
The man in the photo with me is Jack Hill who was the writer/director of the film. He is now 92 and although we have stayed in touch, we hadn’t seen each other in person in several years .
We recently were invited to “Monsterama” in Atlanta for a special screening of the film, and it was a delight to see him, his wife, and all the wonderful fans who love Spider Baby! I am blessed for sure.
Until next time, remember: The glow from your light is strong…hold on to it.
