Irish For A Day!

Irish For A Day!

Are you Irish? I’m not, but March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day! Yay!

Magical little goblins dressed in green, spouting a bit of blarney. Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day! A time to celebrate! Well, sort of…

There was a time I wore the luck of the Irish on my shirtsleeve. A time when this holiday meant I stayed out late and drank things that glowed suspiciously green.

These days, St. Patrick’s Day has me frantically searching for something green to wear so I won’t get pinched all day. If I step anywhere near one of my grandchildren without some green upon my person, I will get pinched.

At my age too many playful pinches can turn into a daylong ice-pack situation.

I also wonder if the corned beef and cabbage (a meal I truly love) is going to give me heart burn. Corned beef and cabbage is the official meal of the day, and although I love it, I have to love it before 6 pm.

Eating after the bewitching hour can lead me to an intense conversation with antacids far into the evening

And then there are the beverage choices of the day. St. Patrick’s Day is famous for beer – green beer, specifically! Now I worry what exactly is making the beer green?

Will it interact with the ship load of medications I now take? Maybe I should celebrate with a sensible glass of white wine… or if I’m feeling wild, an amber colored beer.

Of course, St. Patrick’s Day is also about honoring Irish Heritage, or at least temporarily claiming it. So, here’s to St. Patrick’s Day in my senior years.

It’s less wild and much more sensible since I gave up dancing jigs and closing down pubs. However, it’s still a favorite holiday.

I’m still wearing green, still drinking in celebration, still smiling and still lucky – especially if I remember where I parked the car!
