While looking at my closet, I realized that I’m blessed to have a number of outfits. Taking a more realistic approach to this sometimes overwhelming albatross, I often ask myself “Why do we hang on to the things we no longer wear? ”Clothes that have not seen the light of day in the past decade?”
Maybe that special jacket worn years ago brings back a wonderful memory of a happy event that you attended. Perhaps the boots in the very back of the closet remind us of a vacation with a loved one.
Whatever the reason, it’s natural to want to keep the things that color our world with happiness.
Recently, one of my clients shared a very important point with me. That getting rid of the clothes that are decades old allowed her to be free of some not so good memories and allowed her to make space for future joyful experiences.
I really love that and decided to adopt this same concept with my own space.
When you look inside your closet and the shelves are full, the clothing racks are stuffed beyond approach and you just can’t add one more item of clothing without fighting your way in, then do yourself a favor and take one piece out of the closet each week. Look it over and ask, “Do I want this?”
If the answer is no, let it go. The memories will be with you forever, and in the short term you will have some space to breathe.
