Yes, welcome to Las Vegas heat! We’ve broken all kinds of weather records now, so what do we do to keep cool?
First of all, lots of water! Rule of thumb is to drink ounces equal to one-half of your weight! No cheating, now! I person weighing 120 pounds, for example, should drink 60 ounces of water each day.
Sounds like a lot but please realize this is from time you wake up until bedtime to drink that much water. I have to force myself sometimes to remember to drink water, but I do. I keep a full glass of water on the counter at most times to remind me to drink up!
Also, I keep my house at a comfortable 78 degrees, both for my comfort and for my two kitties. I do notice they lay on the cool tiled floor more often during the summer.
And I give a cold bottle of water to my mail carrier and also the trash pickup driver. Boy, do they appreciate that!
We all need to be aware of heat exhaustion and/or heat stroke. What are the first signs of heat exhaustion?
Heavy sweating.
- Cold, pale, and clammy skin.
- Fast, weak pulse.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Muscle cramps.
- Tiredness or weakness.
- Dizziness.
- Headache.
At the first sign of heat exhaustion, it is important to take the following steps to help get your temperature down and cool your body:
- Move to an air-conditioned place.
- Take a cold shower or using cold compresses.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Remove tight or extra clothing layers.
Unlike heat exhaustion, a heat stroke requires immediate medical attention. Someone experiencing heat stroke may have a headache, confusion, no sweating, rapid heart rate, nausea or vomiting and may lose consciousness.
The Vegas summers are brutal so we need to be aware of keeping safe from heat.
POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND HAPPY HEALTH TO ALL!
