Help Us, Help You

Help Us, Help You

“Why don’t you ask them?” That was my Rana’s simple but direct response to my question.

Last month The Vegas Voice began its 22nd year with our never-ending mission of being the “voice for your health, wealth & good times.” It was a rather presumptuous aspiration, but when I started the publication in 2003, my goal was to make it different from other “senior newspapers” around town and across the country.

I knew what I didn’t want – a publication that primarily (if not exclusively) discusses senior health, or medical issues and of course, Social Security. I envisioned a newspaper (and now magazine) that focuses less on “old people” and more about providing articles that everyone age 50+ can enjoy.

Likewise, I avoided “breaking news” since I believed that it would be “old news” by the time most readers would get around to reading this magazine. My focus rather was to get columnists that could write on various and numerous subjects of interest.

I’ve been extremely fortunate to have 42 authors – everything from A (animals) to V (veterans). More importantly (and yes, selfishly) I admit that I truly admire and like all of them and the fact that we have had writers for many years (some over 15!) speaks for itself.

I’m also extremely proud of the national publication awards received by The Vegas Voice from the North American Mature Publishers Association. NAMPA is the largest and most prestigious senior publication association in the country.

While greatly appreciating the accolades, probably my most favorite compliment was from a Sun City resident favorably comparing The Vegas Voice to Reader’s Digest. Something for everyone.

Lately however, I’ve been wondering if we were missing anything? Over “pillow talk” with my PILL (partner in love & life) and before she falls sound asleep with the dog and cat snuggled by her side, I keep asking her should we do or try anything differently?

With that in mind, and (once again) following my Rana’s suggestion, I’m asking for your assistance. Help us, help you. Is there a topic you would like us to cover?

How can we continue to improve and grow our magazine (and while we’re at it) what’s your opinion and advice regarding our podcasts and videos?

Are you seeing something that this publisher and my Rana are missing? Do you believe that there are some columnists that are past their “Best by” date?

Hence the survey on the next page. Please take 2 minutes to complete and either mail it to The Vegas Voice or even easier, go to our website (thevegasvoice.net) and click on your responses.

We’ll publish the results by no later than the July issue. And for this very grateful publisher, a most appreciative Thank You.
