I want to thank you for your service! For many of us it has been a long run, but we’re still kickin’.
As the year turns into the new, please join me in believing that our long relationship with the VA will only get better. Through all the ups and downs, it has been a blessing for most of us. Thank you, President Lincoln.
As the veteran population ages, ensuring our access to high-quality and comprehensive healthcare is a crucial responsibility. Military service often entails unique physical and psychological burdens, leading to health challenges that may emerge or worsen in later life.
These include chronic conditions, mental health issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the difficulties with mobility or accessibility.
The Department of Veterans Affairs provides a range of benefits and services specifically designed for older veterans, including geriatric and extended care programs, home-based primary care, and adult day health care. Additionally, initiatives like the VA Caregiver Support Program offer resources and assistance to family members who play a vital role in providing care.
Aging veterans, however, still face barriers to care. Many senior veterans live in rural or remote areas that can hinder their access to VA facilities because of distance and transportation challenges.
Veterans may choose to live in these areas for reasons such as lower cost of living, proximity to family, and privacy. However, living in a rural area can also present challenges in accessing healthcare and other services.
These include longer travel times to medical centers, limited availability of specialists, and in some cases, inadequate internet access which can hinder the use of telehealth services.
Then there is the issue of staffing. The prevailing healthcare workforce shortages, or budgetary pressures, at VA medical centers, can further restrict access to services. So, expanding home community-based services, and improving care coordination between the VA and community providers is crucial.
So, it is our hope, as veterans, that our government will continue addressing these challenges by making the needed investments in strengthening our VA’s infrastructure, and give us the professional caring workforce that we need. Recognizing the sacrifices made by veterans and addressing our healthcare issues honors our service and ensures that we receive the dignity that we deserve.
