During the past months, we have worked on our outdoor landscape as well as preparing for our recent holiday season. Perhaps we may have forgotten about our indoor plants?
This month we have the time to work on our indoor plants and plan for Spring!
While spending more time indoors, look at and evaluate the conditions of your indoor plants. Repot any indoor plants that have been in the same container for at least two years.
Replanting into new larger pots will untangle roots, will stimulate nutrient absorption and encourage healthy plant growth. In addition, adding new potting soil will return needed nutrients depleted over time.
All indoor plants require a feeding of indoor plant food. The soil should also be aerated to allow oxygen to surround the roots and to prevent “non-draining and waterlogged” soil.
If needed, add potting soil to cover any exposed roots. Mist indoor plants often with water to keep leaves hydrated and to remove airborne dust and debris from settling on leaves.
By pruning indoor plants, (removing long straggly stems and “out of control” growth), you will make your plants more robust and visually appealing. Remember that indoor plants remove toxins from the air and provide oxygen to your home. So, help them to do their job!
In early January, to prepare for the 2026 Growing Season, you should finish any remaining pruning, and cleanups and complete irrigation improvements and repairs. Also, this is a good time to add sulfur to the soil around your plants to help lower the pH levels before Spring arrives.
Plan for future additions by referring to seed and plant catalogues and doing some on-line research on plants you may be interested in growing. In late January, begin visiting the nurseries since new stock will start arriving!
By mid-month, (with increased daylight hours and warmer temperatures) it will be time to implement landscaping ideas formulated earlier. While it may be chilly outside, stay warm indoors setting up a “mental blueprint” of what you want to grow and how to grow it.
