Recently a family member fell victim to a phone scammer. Luckly the damage was undone by her bank, she was very lucky. Here are some tips for avoiding phone scams.
- Don’t Answer Calls from Unknown Numbers: If you don’t recognize a number, let it go to voicemail. Scammers rarely leave messages.
- Be Careful, Even if Caller ID Seems Familiar:Â Scammers often pretend to be from legitimate businesses, the government, or even family members. Always double-check by calling the official number yourself.
- Never, Never Share Personal Information Over the Phone:Â Real companies and government agencies never ask you to share sensitive details like Social Security numbers, bank information, Medicare numbers, or passwords during unexpected calls.
- Watch Out for Urgent or Threatening Calls: Scammers try to scare or pressure you. They might say you owe money or are in legal trouble. Don’t panic; real agencies never demand immediate payments over the phone.
- Hang Up and Call Back Directly: If you’re unsure (and you should always be unsure) hang up the call. Look up the official phone number of the organization or agency and call them back directly.
- Use Call Blocking Tools:Â Ask a family member or your phone provider to help you set up call-blocking features on your phone to reduce unwanted calls.
- Sign Up for the ‘Do Not Call’ List: Register your phone number at www.donotcall.gov to decrease the number of unwanted telemarketing calls you receive.
- Never Send Money Based on a Phone Call: Never, never, NEVER send money through gift cards, wire transfers, or cash apps if asked by someone over the phone, especially if you don’t know them personally.
- Stay Informed About Common Scams:Â Ask family, friends, or caregivers to keep you updated on new scams. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regularly posts information about scams affecting seniors.
- Trust Your Instincts:Â If something feels wrong or confusing, end the call. Talk it over with someone you trust before taking action.
Following these tips will help protect you from phone scams and keep your personal information safe.
