As 2016 comes to an end, The Vegas Voice wanted to write something to let the “bad guys” know that even during the holiday season, we’re still watching them.
Let’s begin with our elected law enforcement officials (next page). We’re still waiting for them to do their jobs.
On a positive note, another obstacle in guardianship reform is leaving. Sally Ramm, elder rights attorney for the Nevada Aging & Disability Services, who served as the government’s “go-to expert” on guardianship announced that she was retiring in January.
Ms. Ramm was the individual who scolded Publisher Dan for his “harsh” testimony before the Nevada Legislature in 2015. She advised that “these things take time” and pointedly told him that such tone was not conducive for guardianship reform.
The Vegas Voice thereafter uncovered numerous statements made by Ms. Ramm before previous Nevada legislative sessions and “Reform Commissions” advocating her same belief – beginning in 2002. Ramm was never part of the solution, but (just one) of the guardianship problems.
Yet, despite all the reform success, no one has been arrested, no public employee fired and not one victim from this guardianship gulag has received a dime of compensation.
Speaking of money, in 2016 the: (a) Attorney General and Nevada Court system were awarded $3,000,000.00 in non-state funds for guardianship issues; and (b) since October 2015 (one month after private guardian April Parks’ office and home were raided pursuant to subpoenas) she and her attorneys were awarded over $300,000.00 in fees from her former wards.
All that money, but nothing for the victims or to implement reforms. And the “bad guys” continue to hope that The Vegas Voice will simply go away.
