“Yes, it could be cancer.” I had to admit that possibility made me shudder over the Thanksgiving weekend.
It started in early November when I noticed that the left side of my face developed a lump along my chin and neck. And to further compound the situation, it started growing and moving toward my ear.
As regular readers are well-aware, over the years, I very rarely visited a doctor and when I did, mostly complained about the waiting time. I now realize that I remain fortunate that some antibiotics and prescription drugs solved whatever ailed me.
But when I hit the big 7 – 0, my warranty apparently expired. And at my Rana’s insistence, she signed me up with a concierge medical service.
“Look at it this way” my PILL (partner in love & life) explained, “at least you don’t have wait hours to see the doctor.”
Kicking and screaming, I reluctantly agreed.
With the lump growing (and now visible) the doctor (by the way, is it just me or is every medical practitioner younger than me – and my adult children?) did a quick diagnosis and strongly, strongly suggested that I schedule an ultrasound and biopsy ASAP “just in case.”
“Probably just an infection, but let’s find out for sure.” When I inquired further as to the possibilities, he did concede that it could be the “C Word” that my parents only said in a whisper.
The Doc made it clear I was jumping the gun when I asked if I needed to get my affairs in order – but did so anyway. The sad part about this episode was that it only took about 10 minutes, but we’ll save that very quick journey for another time.
Anyway, while awaiting the determination over the Thanksgiving weekend, a miraculous event occurred – the lump became smaller and smaller and eventually disappeared.
The biopsy confirmed it was merely an infection. It ended up much ado about nothing, but a lot better than the alternative.
*On a much more cheerful note, my thanks to our Executive Director and my Bronx brother Bill Caserta for playing Santa at our Vegas Voice Holly Jolly Holiday Show, our annual company holiday party and “Scam, Schemes & Senior Safety” videos.
The one observation I noticed was that while dressed as St. Nick, and without him saying a word (another rarity, also to be discussed at another time) he was greeted by everyone with a smile. No matter the age, everyone – and I mean everyone, had a huge grin when he passed and walked by.
It had me thinking what a shame it way that Santa is not around the entire year. It was indeed remarkable that with all the angry divisions in our country, there was one person who brought everyone together and made you smile.
** And last, but certainly not least: From everyone at The Vegas Voice, we wish you and yours a very happy and healthy New Year. Let’s hope that 2025 is the best year ever!
