Ernie Borgnine

Ernie Borgnine

It’s time to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving – although I believe we should be thankful every month!

As I reflect over the many things that I am thankful for, I can’t help but remember the time I worked with Ernest Borgnine. I know that in my columns I always say how nice everyone is, but I must say that Ernest was truly one of the nicest one’s ever!

Despite his somewhat gruff exterior and well-known temper, underneath it all, Ernie was one of the kindest people I have ever met! He also loved his fans!

In 1957, I had the pleasure of working with him in the pilot for the well-known TV series “Wagon Train.”  That’s me with him in the photo.

Many years later, I ran into him at an autograph show. When he saw me, he immediately got up from his chair and gave me the biggest hug, along with his autograph which said “We sold the series”

Obviously, I had nothing to do with “selling  the series”, but the fact he wrote that is something that I will cherish forever.

You will also remember him from his many roles in movies, such as “From Here to “Eternity”, “The Wild Bunch”, and of course, his Oscar winning role in “Marty.” He also starred in “McHale’s Navy” as well as the series “Air Wolf.”

Ernie received 3 Emmy nominations along with his final one at the age of 92 for his guest starring role in the medical TV series, “ER.”  He was also the voice of “Mermaid Man” in the TV series “Sponge Bob, Square Pants.”

He was married five times, once to Ethel Merman, which lasted only 42 days. In her book, when she described her marriage to him she simply had one completely blank page! His last marriage was for 38 years.

More importantly, he received numerous military awards after serving 10 years in the Navy. He lived a full life and when he died in 2012 at 95, had a military funeral.

I will forever have a place in my heart for him.

Until next time remember… If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours.
