![]() By: Bob Gourley A lot of high school students in Southern California have enjoyed The Habit burgers for a long time. They love to chow down on quality beef at great prices. Well now students and just about everyone else in the valley are getting to know just how good they are. I actually like the sandwiches as well as the burgers. One of my favorites is the Chicken Club. A hand-fileted marinated chicken breast is topped with green leaf lettuce, tomatoes, crisp bacon, avocado and mayo. It is served on toasted sourdough. The mix of avocado and bacon is a taste treat. The Golden Chicken Sandwich started as a temporary menu item but has become so popular it is now a mainstay. A fresh chicken breast is breaded with house-made seasoned flour and buttermilk that is then cooked to a golden brown and topped with red pepper sauce.
Vegans will want to try the veggie burger with a veggie patty resting between a toasted wheat bun with tomatoes, cucumbers and onions. Beef lovers will enjoy a Tri-Tip Steak sandwich covered with shredded lettuce, caramelized onions, mayo and either BBQ or teriyaki sauce. There is also a fish option, line-caught sushi-grade tuna steak with teriyaki glaze and tartar sauce. Burgers are the star and you will find original combos that are filling and affordable. The #l is a charburger with fries and a drink. The sandwich includes fresh tomato, caramelized onions, pickles and mayo on a toasted bun. Sides are as you might expect with French Fries made from Idaho spuds. Onion rings are constructed with sweet white onions and sweet potato fries are a savory experience. Even though the Habit is a meat lovers’ paradise, there is a roster of salads that is just right for fans of the green. The Grilled Chicken Caesar features chopped romaine tossed with Caesar dressing, croutons, freshly grated parmesan cheese and then topped with grilled chicken breast. Other made-to-order salads include a BBQ chicken version with diced tomatoes, red onions, cilantro, crisp bacon and BBQ sauce. There are many much-hyped shakes but the frozen treats at the Habit are as good as any. Each of their shakes or malts is made to order with a choice of chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, mocha or coffee. Vanilla soft serve cones and sundaes are also great ways to top off the meal. Kids have their own specially-packaged menu with a choice of a charburger, chicken nuggets or a grilled cheese. Everything comes with a choice of fries, apple slices, applesauce and a soft drink, apple juice or milk. Four locations have sprung up in the valley. Expect many more as this under-hyped chain continues to grow. They have what people are looking for: quality food, great prices and a friendly place to bring the kids.
