![]() By: Bob Gourley Lucille Buchanan grew up around great BBQ. She used to enjoy her grandma’s cooking in Greenville. After her family came west and settled in Long Beach, California she opened her own restaurant and that was the genesis of Lucille’s Smokehouse BBQ with two locations in the valley. You know you are in for some good eats when you begin to smell the real wood smoking going on. All of the meats are slow-roasted so tenderness is assured. One of the first food items that shows up at the table is a basket of buttermilk biscuits perfectly cooked and accompanied with honey butter. Order more if you run out. Appetizers are meant to be shared. If you can’t decide what to choose, settle for the appetizer platter which is a huge plate of their most popular items including pork rib tips, fried dill pickles, sweet potato fries, fried green tomatoes, Dixie egg rolls, fried okra, chicken strips and spicy hot links.
If you are looking for soup, choose the corn chowder made with fresh sweet corn and roasted mild green chiles bathed in light cream chowder. A chicken Caesar salad is enhanced with croutons tossed with homemade dressing. When it is time to get down to the heavy eating, one of their specialties fits the bill. Pop’s Beloved Fresh Pan Blackened Catfish is covered with Cajun spices that is then pan-blackened and served with Creole mustard sauce. Roasted mashed potatoes and Southern braised greens fill up the plate. Lucille’s Marinated Sirloin Steak is a winner. The meat is soaked for 24 hours in a special marinade that is then grilled and sliced into strips. It is tender and has a slight smoky flavor that really brings out the true character of the meat. Garlic mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables are plate mates. A tri-tip sandwich is made with certified Angus beef that is shaved and tossed in their “mop” sauce and delivered on a soft potato bun. A slate of sandwiches, like Memphis-style pulled pork and smokehouse sliders includes a side. And what a list there is. Everything from southern braised greens to potato chips is offered. Corn on the cob, potato salad and creamy macaroni and cheese will help to fill you up. Even though you will no doubt be full after an appetizer and main course, at least peruse the dessert menu. Big Chocolate Cake is just that, an enormous piece of goodness that is layered with smooth chocolate filling. Old-fashioned banana pudding is highlighted with vanilla wafers and sweet whipped cream. Chocolate lovers will drool over a piece of Snickers Ice Cream Pie with chopped cookies mixed in vanilla bean ice cream sitting on top of chocolate cookie crust. Of course you can get cobbler with seasonal fruit and crumb biscuit topping. Lunch specials are in effect weekdays from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Those looking for gluten-free items will be able to choose from an assortment of dishes. Lucille’s delivers with great BBQ and affordable prices.
