Let's Eat - Great Mexican Food and Good Vibes: Casa Don Juan

That is a promise made by the owners of Casa Don Juan. I have eaten there several times and the consistency of the dishes is one of the reasons why I keep going back.

It is a large restaurant with a festival vibe to it. The bright colors that adorn the walls help to portray the fun feel. You can even sit out on the sidewalk for an al fresco experience.

One of the highlights is the never-ending production of fresh tortillas that are made on-site. It is always fun to watch the fast hands of the preparers.

They are cooked in 100% cholesterol-free vegetable oil. The salsa that accompanies the chips at the beginning of the meal is also made throughout the day with fresh tomatoes, onions and chilies. Bean dip is another choice.

There is a festive bar area where you can order a proper margarita or indulge in an imported beer. Why not snag some nachos with a choice of meat or quesadillas with asada or carnitas to get things started?

The expansive menu will boggle your senses, especially if you haven't visited before. Not only are there lunch and dinner specialties, but you can also order breakfast between 8 - 11 am.

I usually opt for one of the combos. There are almost 40 to choose from with just about any configuration you can
think of. For instance the No. 11 ($11.99) features three chicken, beef or cheese enchiladas with rice and beans.

If you are in the mood for a taco, order the No. 3. The huge plate includes two cheese enchiladas, a taco and sides.

The taco is worth mentioning. The crisp tortilla is chock full of meat, cheese and  lettuce. It is a delight in every bite.

Fans of Chile Relleno will want to order the No. 12 ($11.99). Not one, but two of these beauties are included along with the usual accompaniments.

There are a half dozen shrimp plates that accent the shellfish well. Camarones  Empanizados are breaded and then fried.

If you like them with a spicy accent order the Camarones a la Diabla delivered with hot sauce. Other fish options include filets served Veracruz-style or with a garlic sauce.

Tortas (sandwiches) are showing up on more menus around town and the choices are offered with a range of meat options that include carnitas and chicken. Also between the slices of bread are beans, lettuce, tomato, guacamole and mayonnaise.

The aforementioned breakfast is a plus. Included are samplings like Huevos con Machaca ($7.99) with shredded beef and eggs.

Of course you can find Huevos Rancheros with all of the trimmings. Traditional American breakfast is also available.

The little ones have their own menu to enjoy. All five selections are $5.99 and include a quesadilla, nachos or an enchilada with rice and beans.

Live entertainment is offered during the evening hours. The bar area is usually packed with revelers looking for a good time, delicious food and reasonable prices. Those are all good reasons to visit Casa Don Juan.

Casa Don Juan, Open daily from 7 am-10 pm, 1204 S. Main St., Las Vegas (702) 384-8070.
