Whenever visitors ask about where to get a good steak on the Strip, I always recommend Mon Ami Gabi at Paris. There are many reasons why, including the great location that sits just across the street from the Bellagio fountain show. But the main reason is the expansive list of items and the fairly-reasonable prices.
This is a classic French bistro and the menu reflects it with everything from steak to escargots. In fact, if you want to get your meal off to a great start, order the Wild Escargots de Bourgogne with oven-roasted snails swimming in garlic-herb butter.
There is also a house-made country pate served with whole grain mustard and warm toast. Steak Tartare is made with banana pepper aioli, baby kale and baguette toast.
An outstanding onion soup has gruyere cheese sitting on top. If you are looking for a fitting salad chow down on the tomato edition with Corsican feta, cucumber and red wine vinaigrette.
This is definitely the place for a good steak and you don’t have to pay too much to enjoy it. I have ordered the butcher-cut Hanger Steak many times and at $27.95 it is hard to beat.
Sliced thin, it goes very well with the signature hand-cut fries. Other steak varieties include Filet Mignon, New York Strip and bone-in Ribeye. Silky pureed spuds are also available. Macaroni Gratin and French green beans are other capable sides.
If you aren’t in the mood for steak enjoy Trout Almandine with brown butter and lemon or Chicken Grand-Mere with all-natural chicken, bacon, mushrooms and potatoes.
Leave room for dessert, especially the Classic Profiteroles, those delicate pastry balls stuffed with vanilla ice cream and homemade double chocolate fudge. There is also a Berry Brioche Bread Pudding with raspberry caramel and Chocolate Mousse with semi-sweet chocolate, whipped cream and chocolate pearls. Vanilla Bean Crème Brule is a classic.
Breakfast is an important part of the restaurant’s DNA. They offer a daily breakfast and a weekend brunch. The omelets are superb. I’m not sure how they prepare them so juicy with a silky smoothness but I have never had a dry one as each and every egg is cooked to perfection. Eggs Benedict are delivered with chick pea croutons and hollandaise vert plus one choice prepared with smoked salmon.
Waffles are made from scratch with many combinations including a selection with caramelized apple and fresh whipped cream. Bananas Foster with caramel sauce is appealing along with Chocolate-Hazelnut with Nutella.
Crepe pancakes like cinnamon with cream cheese icing or lemon marmalade will sweeten your taste buds. They also have a half-dozen fresh juices ranging from orange to strawberry and white grape with mint.
One note of caution: if you are planning to just show up without a reservation don’t. Especially at dinner. The place is always jumping so be sure to plan ahead. You won’t be disappointed.
