Considering Dry January

Considering Dry January

I’m always surprised when I can still experience a “first” after the age of 60.

This month that first will be to fully participate in Dry January. After a hectic six weeks of holiday festivities, parties, delicious meals, and equally delicious wines, it’s time to hit reset as we begin 2026.

There is evidence of Dry January campaigns as far back as the 1940s in Europe, but the modern-day equivalent began in 2013. Alcohol Change UK started it (check out their website for more info).

During that first challenge, 4,000 people signed up. By 2023, 260 million U.S. drinkers had jumped on the Dry January bandwagon, and the number keeps increasing, led by younger drinkers and those interested in the Sober Curious trend of consuming low or no alcohol drinks.

Studies have shown that there are many reported benefits to completing Dry January. They range from a sense of achievement to better sleep, more energy, weight loss, reduced stress, increased awareness, and money saved.

If you decide to participate in the challenge, it’s important to keep a sense of ritual. For example, if you drink a glass or two of wine with dinner, fill that glass with sparkling water and sliced fruit.

You could also start a new ritual like enjoying a cup of decaffeinated, artisanal tea after your meal. Fever-Tree sodas are another great alternative.

There are also some particularly good no or low alcohol wines. Check out brands like Geisen and Surely or websites like Zero Proof. The latter offers alcohol-free spirits, wines, and beers.

Dry January is not about what’s missing – It’s about elevating what’s possible. I’m going to use it to hopefully kickstart a healthier new year, but that doesn’t mean I’m giving up wine. I want to widen my aperture about what else is available.

When you walk through the vineyards and see the grapes growing or when you pair a dish with the perfect wine, it’s magical. The wine lifestyle is about slowing down and appreciating the concept of farm to table.

My 2026 mantra is: Everything in moderation, including moderation. Cheers!
