Companion

Companion

Scary, horror, thriller! Yes, I actually sat through this movie and am happy to present it to you. Director Drew Hancock did an outstanding job directing this film.

Sophie Thatcher, the lead, plays Iris, a gorgeous young woman but without her happy enthusiasm for life. Existence is a dull, gloomy slog, as her voiceover reveals. A miracle happens when she meets Josh (Jack Quaid) a puppyish male. She falls instantly in love; a love that never wavers for an instant.

Companion, in its opening minutes is preoccupied with Iris’s anxiousness as Josh drives her far out in the countryside to spend a weekend with his friend Kat (Megan Suri) a Russian boyfriend, and an easygoing gay couple (Harvey Guillen and Lukas Gage). Iris immediately realizes she isn’t taken seriously.

That’s because Iris is an android, even worse, a rental android, programed to be Josh’s unquestionable devoted sexual and romantic partner. We soon see Josh doesn’t take her seriously either and seems to regard her as a female version of an emotional security dog. We learn that Josh has adjusted her intelligence settings downward to a low, easy commandable level.

Her love, when put to the test triggers a passionate response so startling and violate that the weekend winds up a complete bloodbath. At this point the movie contains many surprises. Companion is a clever, suspenseful and absurdly funny film.

Iris soon comes to realize relationships and men aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. Hell hath no fury like an android scorned.

A strong performance by Sophie Thatcher. Some say it’s “The First Great Film of 2025.” This movie has positive reviews; sharp, suspenseful, and hilarious combination of tech anxiety and modern dating challenges. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and am giving this android film a “B” or “4” movie rating.
