Black Underwear

It was exhilarating to be a part of the cast of one hundred in the 1961 production at ‘The Latin Quarter” in New York City. A new star appeared there every six weeks.

Dorothy Kilgallen, with Johnnie Ray by her side, attended each new opening. We were anxious to read her review the following morning in “The New York Times.”

At Liberace’s opening night, the showroom was filled with movie and Broadway stars, including Ethel Merman from “Gypsy.” After the big opening number, I went through the dressing room to the light booth to watch Liberace. He received a much-deserved standing ovation.

I was mesmerized by his extraordinarily talented performance. So mesmerized, I forgot I was supposed to be on stage next with my dancing partner, Ray.

Thank goodness, the two couples that danced behind us were already on stage. I was so embarrassed that I missed my entrance.

After the finale, I grabbed my robe and went to Liberace’s dressing room. I knocked on his door.

When he opened it, I asked him, “Are you wearing black underwear?” Looking surprised, he replied, “Yes!”

I responded, “When you entered the stage wearing your white tuxedo, while seated at the piano, your black boxer shorts showed through your white pants.”

He answered, “I start my act in the black tuxedo with tails, so I put on black underwear. I quickly changed into my white tuxedo and never thought about it. I am so appreciative you told me!

“What’s your name?” I said, “Marlene.” He said with a smile, “I will not forget you. How about a hug?”

After we hugged, I told him, “I became so involved watching you that I missed my entrance.” We had a good laugh together. “Call me Lee.” He said.

At the end of Lee’s engagement, He created his homemade meatballs and spaghetti for the entire cast. We all appreciated the delicious meal and the memory-maker party.

To have known Lee, is to love Lee. His closing song is the appropriate title for our photograph, “Thanks for the Memories.”
