Back to My Roots

Recently I went back to the Midwest to visit with family. I discovered that through all of my travels (both in the USA and abroad) you can never truly return home, to the familiarity you once knew.

During this very quick whirlwind visit, the local Cracker Barrel was the restaurant of choice and I saw what they had in the store by way of fashions. Much to my surprise there were a lot of faux fur vests, jean jackets, and yes, prairie dresses.

Keeping in mind that this fashion maven was used to stores like Nordstrom, Dillard’s and various other smaller boutiques, I knew then and there that I’d have to look past myself. I realized that not everyone wants to wear fashionable clothing!

Spending a few days in my former home town of 18,000, I noticed that everyone was in shorts, flip flops and tee shirts. It was a good indicator that casual clothing is truly in style.

With that being said, I didn’t bother to check out any of the local stores, besides the Cracker Barrel since my last visit showed me that jeans, short booties, and bulky sweaters were going to be a hit for the coming Fall season.

To that point, it’s always good for me to come away from the world of fashion and know that our amazing country has unique styles that appeal to folks from all over the map. There is some level of comfort knowing that jeans are a main staple from coast to coast, and that some things never change.

The best part of returning to my childhood home is that it affords me a step back in time where a  little piece of Americana like baseball, apple pie and, yes, the Cracker Barrel, are parts of my youth. And, yes, I’m very proud of it.
