Are You Brave?

Are You Brave?

Are you brave? I’m not so sure about myself.

I’ve never considered myself to be a squeamish female, but I have to admit I am wary of bugs.

Butterflies are beautiful, bees buzz (and sting) and mosquitoes bite. I also hate flies – you never know where they’ve been and what baggage they carry!

I’m not partial to spiders either. Thay are arachnids, and some of them can jump. I’ve never seen a jumper, but the regulars move so fast, they make me nervous.

I saw a spider last month and I confess I couldn’t stifle a little gasp. Okay, it was more like a scream, I guess.

I scared the dog. She jumped up, looked around, growled, and turned to me for reassurance.

“Don’t look at me,” I said. “I tried, but there’s a live spider in this room! I tried to stomp on it to protect you, but it pulled a Houdini and disappeared. It practically flew across the floor! Quick as can be, and poof! it was out of sight.”

Therein lies the problem. I can’t see it anymore, but I know it’s there – somewhere. My home, a place where I’m supposed to feel safe and comfy and it’s invading my space.

What if it turns up in the same place I want to be? Do you think that spider will look at me in a civilized manner and say, “This is your turf. You have the right of way!”

What if it follows me into the bedroom? Spiders are cunning little creatures. They can dash under things (like beds) or hide in the folds of draperies or a bedspread.

What happens when I turn the bed down at night? Can they see in the dark? Is it going to crawl in beside me? OMG!

Bugs are creatures
That crawl and fly
I don’t mind them
In the sky

Or if they crawl
Up a wall
Up your leg
Or down the hall

But if they touch me
I swat and shout
“Watch out bug!
I’m gonna take you out!”

That’s pretty brave, isn’t it?
