In the classic TV show Seinfeld, one of the most famous episodes involved Jerry’s friend “Elaine” (played by Julie Louis Dreyfus) bemoaning the discontinuation and future loss of her contraceptive “Sponge.”
This 1995 episode theme revolved around the men in her life and whether they were “sponge worthy.”
The term “sponge worthy” was born and is commonly defined as being (omitting the suggestive references) someone considered highly impressive or special enough to justify the use of a highly limited or coveted resource.
Fast forward thirty years and as Baby Boomers aged to “senior citizens” The Voice Vegas wants to borrow the term for the upcoming election with a special twist.
Our President and my PILL (partner in love & life) Rana Goodman has demonstrated her fierce dedication and commitment to seniors in Nevada. Her never-ending “Donna Quixote” crusade to protect and advocate for our readers has been more than apparent and evident.
Our readers know this too. Over the years, Rana has received literally hundreds of emails and phone calls asking for her recommendations as to who they should vote for (or against) in the election.
Now, I don’t mean President or even national (U.S. Senate, Congress) political officials.
I mean state (Nevada Senator/Assembly) and local – and especially the candidates that I know full well that 99% of our readers have no idea as to who they are – judges.
I recognize that the Las Vegas Review Journal has the “judging the judges” election segment. But that survey is reserved exclusively for lawyers – you know, those lawyers that donate to the judges’ campaign war chest.
A conflict of interest? NO, just another example that the judicial system is “not broken, but fixed.”
Let there be no doubt – Rana could care less if a candidate running for a particular office is a Republican, Democrat, conservative or progressive. Her only question: What is their position regarding seniors?
Whether a Democratic Socialist to a MAGA Republican, Rana’s concern is what the candidate has either done (or not done) or promises to do for seniors.
Now, of course, the candidate (depending on the elected office he/she is seeking) may and should have other issues, however, Rana’s overriding interest is whether the particular candidate has demonstrated and will further pursue actions in our readers’ (and all seniors’) interest.
So forgive the tongue-in-cheek expression but our question to all candidates for this upcoming election is simple, direct and straight forward: “Are You “Rana-Worthy”?
Do you support seniors or ignore them? (By the way, all candidates know or should know that seniors represent the largest voting bloc for voting). And last, but certainly not least, you better believe Rana will let YOU know via our Vegas Voice blog, email blasts, podcasts, TV videos and our magazine whether the person seeking the elected office is “Rana-Worthy.”
